Hello, my name is Atija Byers. I am a certified Birth and Postpartum Doula in Sacramento, CA and I am blessed to be a wife and mother of three beautiful children.
•
My journey to becoming a doula began with the birth of my second child. After being rear-ended in a car accident late in pregnancy, I was in severe pain and uncertain if a vaginal birth would still be possible. I chose to work with a doula for additional support—and that decision changed everything. The knowledge, care, and emotional strength my doula provided were truly invaluable. I was so moved by the experience that I chose to have the same doula by my side for the birth of my third child. Through those experiences, I realized just how impactful doula support can be. It inspired me to pursue this path so I could offer the same guidance, comfort, and advocacy to other expectant mothers.
•
As I began researching pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and postpartum care, I also uncovered the disturbing racial disparities that exist in maternal healthcare. African American women and other women of color are far more likely to experience complications or loss compared to their white counterparts, due to systemic inequalities and gaps in care. Learning about these realities deepened my commitment and propelled me toward becoming a certified doula—to not only support birthing people, but to help bridge these disparities through education and advocacy.
